Graduating Year
Puffins is the final stage of your child's journey at The Study Nursery before they begin Reception. During this important year, children continue to develop the confidence, independence and skills needed for a successful transition to school.
Most children who will graduate that academic year will join Puffins in September from the Owls Room. Occasionally, children with later birthdays may move into Puffins between September and January to ensure they feel confident and secure as they prepare for their transition to school.
In Puffins, we continue to build children's confidence, independence and love of learning through a balance of structured adult-led learning and child-led exploration. A strong focus is placed on school readiness, supporting early literacy and numeracy, communication and language, problem-solving, teamwork, turn-taking and independence in daily routines.
All children in Puffins graduate together at the end of the academic year, celebrating their time at The Study Nursery and Preschool before moving on to the next exciting chapter as they begin Reception.
Nursery Specialisms
Forest School
Our teachers support children through achievable learning goals while maintaining high expectations. Literacy and numeracy are explored in greater depth through small-group and one-to-one activities, carefully tailored to each child's individual learning style.
This stage helps children develop greater confidence, independence and school readiness as they prepare for their final year before starting school. Children will usually move into Puffins during the academic year before they begin Reception, when they are developmentally ready.
Music
Ms Barbara, our music specialist, visits the children weekly. Music continues to play an important part in our curriculum for Owls as they continue to develop and show off their language skills. Singing remains a wonderful way to encourage children for whom English is an additional language or who are simply shy, to participate with much more confidence. Through singing a wider range of songs and rhymes, alongside well-loved traditional Nursery Rhymes, children continue to be exposed to new vocabulary and will use it with growing confidence.
Using shaker eggs, claves and drums is now a wonderful way for children to explore rhythm, rhyme and phonics.
Physical Education
Mrs Cropley has become a firm favourite to the Nursery children and is our PE teacher. She teaches the children once a week and works on developing their balance and co-ordination and listening skills through fun and engaging sessions. The children particularly enjoy following trickier 2 part instructions and attempting the courses set up that include crawling under and jumping through or in moving hoops.
Languages
Children enjoy weekly language sessions where they areintroduced to either French or Spanish through songs, stories, games and conversation. These fun, interactive sessions helpdevelop communication skills, confidence and an appreciation ofdifferent languages and cultures.
